DBT-RA Program in Biotechnology and Life Science: The Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, invites applications from Indian citizens for the prestigious DBT-Research Associateship (DBT-RA) in Biotechnology and Life Sciences for the year 2024-25.
This program aims to train and nurture young researchers and scientists, fostering the growth of the biotechnology sector in India. The Associateship is a temporary full-time assignment tenable for two years, with the possibility of extension up to four years based on research progress.
Eligible candidates with a Ph.D. in Science, Engineering, or M.D./M.S. in medicine and a strong academic background are encouraged to apply. Indian citizens are invited to apply for the DBT-Research Associateship to pursue research in frontier areas of Biotechnology and Life Sciences. This program is supported by the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India.
Aim of the Fellowship
The DBT-Research Associateship (DBT-RA) aims to: Train and nurture young researchers and scientists. Generate a critical mass of trained manpower in modern biology and biotechnology. Build a robust postdoctoral base to support the growth of the Biotechnology sector in India.
Eligibility Criteria
Ph.D. in Science, Engineering, or M.D./M.S. in any area of medicine with research interests in Biotechnology and Life Sciences. Good academic record. Applicants who have submitted their Ph.D./M.D./M.S. thesis are also eligible. If selected, they will receive a lower fellowship amount until they qualify for the degree.
Age Limit
The upper age limit is 40 years for male candidates and 45 years in the case of female candidates as on the last date of application.
Employment
Applicants employed at the time of application (permanent, contractual, etc.) are eligible. Selected candidates must relinquish their employment to accept the fellowship.
Tenure of Fellowship
The Associateship is a temporary full-time assignment for 2 years. Annual renewal based on research progress. May be extended up to 4 years in exceptional cases, depending on research progress.
General Guidelines
- A candidate can avail the DBT-RA fellowship only once in their career.
- The fellowship is tenable only in India, at recognized academic institutions, national laboratories, and other R&D institutions. The host institution must provide administrative and infrastructural support.
- Fellows cannot work with their PhD guides or co-guides. Mentors can supervise a maximum of two DBT-RA fellows at a time. Mentors must hold a regular academic/research position and have a PhD/MD/MS degree.
- The fellowship cannot be availed at the same institution where the candidate earned their PhD/MD/MS degree.
- Honorary Professors, Emeritus Professors/Scientists, and DBT Distinguished Professors can mentor fellows if they have available resources and labs.
- Applicants from the North East Region can work at any university/institution in India.
- The grant can be used for minor equipment, consumables, contingencies, and domestic travel.

- Online Application: Applications must be submitted online at the DBT-RA Online Portal https://ra.dbtindia.gov.in/ or https://fellowships.gov.in/.
- Single Submission: Only one application per candidate is allowed. Multiple applications will lead to disqualification.
- Application Form: Fill out and submit the form on the DBT-RA Online Portal, including personal information, academic qualifications, research contributions, referee details, proposed research work, proposed mentor details, and proposed host institution.

- Self-attested copies of degree certificates
- Consent letter from the mentor (format available on the portal)
- Referees: Provide names and contact details of referees. Referees must upload their letters of recommendation on the portal by August 7, 2024. Late submissions will not be accepted.
- Submission Deadline: Ensure the application is submitted through the DBT-RA Online Portal by the deadline. Applications not submitted through the portal will not be accepted.
