Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB) invites application for admission to the PhD program (January 2025 session) in various domains of disease biology, neurobiology, bioinformatics and plant science.

RGCB PhD program is affiliated to the Regional Centre for Biotechnology (RCB) an “Institution of National Importance” providing education, training and research established by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India under the auspices of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The selected candidates will register for the PhD program with RCB and should follow the guidelines issued by RCB and RGCB for the award of PhD degree.

The PhD program at RGCB offers interdisciplinary training starting January 2025 in areas such as disease biology, neurobiology, bioinformatics, and plant sciences. Admission is open to postgraduates with a minimum of 60% in Life Sciences or related fields, a valid JRF fellowship, and who are under 26 years of age (relaxed to 28 for SC/ST/differently abled). Selection involves application screening and personal interviews at RGCB’s campus, with email-only communication and updates on the RGCB site.

Eligibility for PhD admission

  1. Candidates with a post-graduate degree in Life/ Agricultural/ Environmental/ Veterinary/Pharmaceutical/Medical Sciences or allied subjects (Biochemistry/Biotechnology/Bioinformatics/Biophysics/Chemistry/ Microbiology, etc.) with a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate or equivalent grade in the UGC 10 point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale where ever grade system is followed) or an equivalent from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country which assess, accredit or assure quality and standard of the educational institutions are eligible to apply.
  2. A relaxation of 5% of marks (from 60% to 55%), or an equivalent relaxation of grade point, may be allowed for those candidates belonging to the SC, ST and differently abled candidates.
  3. The candidate should have a valid JRF (UGC/ CSIR/ ICMR/ DBT/ DST-INSPIRE or any other nationally-competitive fellowship) for a period of 5 years offered by the Government.
  4. Upper age limit should not exceed is 26 years as on July 01, 2024.
  5. For the SC, ST and differently abled candidates’ upper age limit should not exceed 28 years as on July 01, 2024.

Selection Procedure

Candidates meeting all the eligibility criteria and vacancy specified area will be shortlisted for the interview. Based upon the performance of the student in the personal interview which is being scheduled at RGCB main campus Poojappura will be shortlisted for the final selection. PhD interviews will be held only offline mode. The guidelines for interview will be provided to all the shortlisted candidates. List of the short listed candidates will be displayed on RGCB notice board and the website. The final selection is based the outcome of the one to one interaction with the faculty scientist.

Application Procedure

  1. Only online applications will be accepted.
  2. Application Fee (₹ 500) must be paid online using ‘SB Collect’ of State Bank of India through the URL given in the Payment Stage. SC/ ST/ EWS/ differently abled candidates are exempted from paying the processing fees.
  3. Last date for receiving completed applications is 5 PM November 20, 2024. Incomplete applications or those without processing fees will be rejected.

Fees for PhD Programme

Students admitted for PhD programme will have to pay an administrative fee of ₹5000 per semester for the first ten semesters and ₹10,000 for every semester after.

All the students have to pay the RCB administrative fees.
