The university, renowned for its excellence in research and academic rigor, invites applications from aspiring scholars who wish to pursue advanced research in their chosen fields. This is a significant opportunity for candidates with a strong academic background and a passion for research.
Eligibility Criteria
To apply for the PhD programs at JMI, candidates must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Master’s Degree: A candidate must hold a Master’s degree with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent Grade “B” in the UGC seven-point scale. Those who hold an equivalent degree from a foreign university or an institution recognized by JMI are also eligible.
- Relaxation: A 5% relaxation in marks (from 55% to 50%) is granted to candidates belonging to the SC/ST/OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) category, differently-abled applicants, or those who completed their Master’s degree before 19th September 1991.
- M.Phil. Degree Holders: Candidates with an M.Phil. degree with a minimum of 55% marks from a recognized Indian university/institute, or an equivalent foreign qualification, are also eligible to apply for direct admission to the PhD program.
Provisional Admission for Final Semester Master’s Students
Candidates currently in the final semester of their Master’s program may apply for PhD admission on a provisional basis. These candidates must, however, successfully complete their Master’s degree with the qualifying marks and submit the required documents to the university before the admission deadline.
Part-Time PhD Program
For candidates wishing to pursue a part-time PhD, a “No Objection Certificate” (NOC) from their employer is mandatory. The NOC should be in accordance with the conditions set out in the PhD Ordinances of JMI.
Admission Process
The admission process for PhD programs at JMI includes an entrance test, followed by an interview. The entrance test will be conducted in English, except for departments focusing on languages and fine arts, where the question papers may be set in the relevant languages. The test is divided into two papers:
- Paper I: This paper consists of 100 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) on research methodology and is common to all PhD applicants. It has a duration of two hours.
- Paper II: This subject-specific paper will have a duration of three hours.
Candidates who secure at least 50% aggregate marks in both papers will qualify for the interview round.
Exemptions and Special Considerations
Certain categories of candidates are exempted from the entrance test. These include holders of prestigious fellowships such as DST-INSPIRE, UGC/CSIR-JRF, AYUSH-NET/JRF, and other equivalent fellowship holders. However, such candidates must still qualify for the national-level eligibility test or the university’s entrance test to be considered for PhD admission.
Teacher fellowship holders, such as those under the Quality Improvement Programme (QIP), are required to provide an NOC from their respective institutions. They must also appear before the Departmental Research Committee (DRC) or Centre Research Committee (CRC) to discuss their research proposal. Additionally, they must provide proof of sanctioned study leave as per the rules of the Government of India or other relevant regulatory bodies.
Interview Process
The interview will play a crucial role in the selection process. Candidates need to secure a minimum of 40% in the interview to qualify for admission. The university reserves the right to deny admission to any candidate, with reasons recorded accordingly.

Interested candidates can apply online for JMI’s PhD programs from October 10, 2024, to October 30, 2024. The application process is entirely online, and candidates must fill out the form through the university’s official admission portal.
