17 Junior Research Fellow (JRF) Positions Leading to PhD at ILS, Bhubaneswar: Institute of Life Sciences (ILS), Bhubaneswar, an autonomous Institute of the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India, engaged in advanced research, invites applications from Indian nationals for the position of Junior Research Fellows leading to Ph.D. program. The applicants are strongly encouraged to visit the ILS webpage for detailed information regarding the research activities at the Institute of Life Sciences.

Essential Qualification/ Eligibility

I. For Fellowship Holders

  • Candidates should have passed their M.Sc. / M.Tech. / M.Pharm./ M.V.Sc. or equivalent qualification in Life Sciences and allied subjects (Biochemistry/ Biotechnology/ Bioinformatics/ Biophysics/ Chemistry/ Microbiology) with at least 55% (without rounding off) (relaxation will be given as per GOI guideline).
  • Candidates awaiting final results may also apply; however, if shortlisted, they have to produce their final mark sheet on the interview date, failing which they will not be interviewed. AND
  • Candidates should have also qualified in CSIR/UGC-JRF, DBT-JRF, UGC-RGNF, ICMR-JRF, DSTINSPIRE, or any other nationally competitive fellowship offered by the Government of India having a valid fellowship for five years.
  • If the original certificate is unavailable, the candidate must provide a photocopy of the original admit card and the particular result page highlighting their roll number, along with the application.
  • Candidates with score sheets can also apply; however, they must submit their certificate at the time of the interview if shortlisted.

II. For Fellowship Holders: For Bioinformatics / Computational Biology

  • Candidates having M.Sc. / M. Tech / B. Tech in Bioinformatics / Computational Biology or equivalent qualifications in allied subjects or M. Pharm. with a minimum of 55 % aggregate marks or equivalent CGPA grade points (relaxation will be given as per GOI guideline) are eligible to apply.
  • The candidates should have qualified for any national-level entrance test (NET/GATE/GPAT/UGC/ICMR and equivalent).
  • The applicants must know programming/scripting using Perl/Python/C/R/Linux languages, molecular modelling, NGS data analysis, database development, or the languages required to complete the project.
  • The applicant should submit a one-page write-up describing their computational/bioinformatics work experience. A written test to assess the skill of programming may be conducted if required followed by an interview for the selected candidates.

Selection Procedure

There will be a 3-tier Selection procedure for selecting the candidates for the Ph.D. Program for
fellowship holders.

  • Screening of the applicants: Shortlisting based on the criteria mentioned in the advertisement. If the number of applicants are more, the additional criteria/cut-off will be applied to make the shortlisted number reasonable.
  • Selection of the candidates: First round of interviews followed by laboratory interaction for shortlisted candidates only. Shortlisted candidates will be called for the second and final round of interviews, followed by selection.
  • Note: The selected candidate list will be displayed on the ILS website and subsequently offer letter will be sent to the respective candidates stating the name of the PI assigned and the joining date. The interested student should accept the offer and join ILS within the stipulated joining date. In case of any emergency, the joining date can be extended if intimated before the expiry of the joining date mentioned in the offer letter to a maximum of one month. Multiple extension requests will not be entertained. Candidates offered a Ph.D. position in the last selection process and who did not join ILS will not be eligible to apply in the immediately following Ph.D. advertisement.

Age Limit for the ILS JRF

The candidate should be below 28 years of age as of the last date of the application submission.
However, the upper age limit may be relaxed up to 5 years in the case of SC/ST/Persons with Disability
(PwD)/female applicants and 03 years in the case of OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) applicants.

Application Fees for ILS JRF

Applicants except SC/ST/ PWD are required to pay a non-refundable amount of Rs.500/-. Candidates have to pay the application fee online only by using the link provided in the online application form.

Fellowship Emoluments

The fellowship and other emoluments will be per the guidelines of the funding agencies – DST/ DBT /CSIR/UGC/ICMR and revised from time to time for fellowship holders. To and fro bus/rail fare by the shortest route limited to sleeper class will be paid to all the candidates appearing for the interview.
